Communication Efforts

It has been hard to keep up with efforts to communicate with our many alumni! I've been trying to make a few announcements and updates on the Tacoma Baptist Alumni page on Facebook. If you haven't asked to be part of that group, you would be welcomed! Being a full-time teacher has, of course, been my first priority for the past many months, but please don't think we have lost interest in you! Get in touch and let me know what's new in your life. I'd love to catch up during the summer.

Meanwhile, it's almost time to graduate the Class of 2011. Join us on June 14, in the gym at 7 pm for another joy-filled night!

It's been a long time

It has been a long time since I have posted on this blog. Since we have an alumni facebook page, I have kept information flowing to the the 500+ alumni who have joined there and have posted less here. However, I would love to post your photos and information here, too, now the the new southsoundchrisitan.org website is up and running and folks can actually connect to this blog from there!

We have had a great weekend of Homecoming festivities! At the Homecoming Banquet on Friday, October 22, at C.I. Shenanigan's on the Tacoma waterfront, 135 banquet-goers enjoyed a great meal and a fun time. Then last night, the Crusader football team posted a stunning victory (58-0) at Mt. Tahoma HS Stadium in a football game against Rainier Christian HS. Congratulations to Kassia Joe and Jeriah Carroll, the 2010 Homecoming Queen and King, who were crowned on the field at halftime in spite of the howling wind and rain. Your classmates did a great job of choosing two outstanding young people to represent them!

More babies arrive!

Two more alumni have welcomed a new baby into their families.

Congratulations to Amy (Van Gilder '95) and Jeff Reinmuth who welcomed Campbell Mercy on March 15. Campbell joins older siblings Cooper (3) and Kaelyn (8).

And more congratulations go to Jason ('92) and Leanne Van Gilder. Owen Robert was born on March 25. Levin (4) and Philip (2)are happy with their new brother.

On an especially happy note for this writer, both new babies are my grandchildren! Hooray for grandkids!

Catching up with the news--

News item number one: By now, most of you who live in the area are aware that the girls basketball team finished their appearance at the State B championships in Spokane with 5th place. One of our senior girls was named to the all-tournament first team and tied the record for the most three pointers in a single game--nine! We are very proud of the girls.

News item number two: Patty and Marc R (class of '99) are now parents of little Jon Isaac. After Patty spent 40-some days in the hospital, little Jon was truly a miracle. They are praising God for him.

News item number three: TBS English teacher, Lisa McGowan was featured in an article in the Tacoma newspaper this week. She does an incredible job of teaching Elie Weisel's Night, and, as part of the unit, invited a holocaust survivor to talk to all of our sophomore class members. I'm not sure how long it will remain on-line, but you can check out the article here.

News item number three: A Night of Fine Arts will be held on Thursday, March 25th from 6 to 8 pm in the gym. We would love to have you come and see the work our students have done. Featured will be the holocaust museum projects that Lisa McGowan's students created. The art department will showcase student work, the yearbook and digital photography classes will show the best of the year's photography, the music department will present instrumental chamber music, and student creative writing will be available. Admission is free, with donations going to support the instrumental music department.

News item number four: This Saturday, March 20, the annual auction will be held in the TBS gym. Admission is $15. Come and help make the night a success for the school. You may get some incredible bargains, too. Doors open at 4:00 pm.

Heading to State!

It's been a busy winter around the TBS campus! Our wrestling team represented the school well last weekend, with a team finish of 5th place. Two of our wrestlers, Howie Herdle and Stephen Talen, both sons of alumni (Kirsten Norman '90 and Mark Talen 80-something) finished fourth in their weight class. Second-year wrestler, Josh Peters, was crowned the state champion at his weight class! We are really proud of our young men, who give all glory to God for their abilities. If you live in the Tacoma area, you may have read the News Tribune interview with Josh, who clearly gave God credit!

Next week, the girls basketball team heads to Spokane for the State B tournament. There is one last chance to see them in action at the Tri-District Championship Game this Saturday, February 27, at 4:30 p.m., at Chief Leschi. Let's just say that they play an intense game of basketball and are a lot of fun to watch. Jenny Vincent's (Hagen '96) 2-month old son passed away from pneumonia this week. The memorial service is March 1st, 2pm at Mountain View Memorial Park in Lakewood on Steilacoom Blvd. Jenny asked that the news be posted for friends who may want to attend. There is a viewing on Feb 28th from 1p-9p.

I know that as TBS family, you will keep Jenny, her husband, and their extended families in your thought and prayers during this difficult time. I have contact information if you'd like to send a card or note. Send me an email and I'll be happy to share it.

Hope3 Tour

If you live in the area, we would love to have you stop by the school and check out the TBS of today. The Hope3 tours are not an enrollment drive (although you are welcome to come to open house on February 4 from 6-8pm), but a chance to share with you what God is doing at TBS. You might be pleasantly surprised to see how things have changed since you were a student here!

Alumni at the game

On Monday, December 21, the alumni were invited to come to the high school basketball games. The call was made for all the grads to come for a photo op between the girls and boys games. While not all the alumni present came for the photo, here's a photo record of the great kids who came to enjoy the evening! (Those grads who didn't get in the photo are great, too, just delinquent for not responding to the call!) Thanks for coming.

Christmas Break

A few graduates have stopped by this week to say "hi" and chat. It is so good to see them all. We are incredibly proud of our graduates!

I saw Tara Leaman '06 for a bit on Tuesday. She is a senior at Cedarville this year. Hardly seems possible that she is ready to graduate!

Also stopping by for a visit were Gabby Teobaldo '08 (home from Eastern Washington U.) and Jason Lutterloh '08 (from Abilene Christian U). They both looked great and were happy to be home for the holidays.

Just letting any of you who read this know that there are home basketball games on Monday, December 21. Admission is free for alumni. Come and enjoy a night of basketball and maybe run into a few former classmates! Girls game starts at 6:00pm, boys at 7:30.

State Champs--again!

The great sports legacy of the Tacoma Baptist Crusaders continues. The boys soccer team won the state championship last night. They beat Bear Creek School, 2-0! The best part: This is the second state championship in a row for our soccer team! Congratulation to Coach Josh Narayan and his team.

In other sports news, the football team heads to the semi-finals next Saturday in the Tacoma Dome at 4:00 pm. They beat Willapa yesterday 22-0 to continue their undefeated season.

Join us next Saturday at the Dome to cheer for a Crusader victory! The team plays at 4pm against Adna. Cost for admission is $9 for adults, adjusted for students with ASB, seniors, etc.

Update: Sorry to report that the Crusaders lost to Adna at the Dome. While the season ends, we are proud of our young men who had a great season.

For those of you praying for the Rickabaughs, good news! Patty is doing well and seems to be healing. The doctor has given her the go-ahead for some activity. Continue to pray for a healthy pregnancy until April of 2010! Oh, and by-the-way, it's a boy!

HOPE3 stands for Hearts of Passion for Education, Excellence and Eternity. The one-hour tour will tell you about Tacoma Baptist today! The tour is not a bid to enroll your kids here, or a financial plea, but rather a time for us to share the mission of our great school. (Of course, if you are interested in enrolling your kids, or giving to the school, you are welcome to do so, but you won't be asked!)

Several dates are scheduled--November 17, December 1, December 8, January 19, January 26 at the Tacoma campus. Additional dates are available at the New Hope campus. Could you come to one of them?

It's been a quiet couple of weeks after the excitement of Homecoming activities at the end of October. At school, we are looking forward to honoring our veterans at our annual assembly on November 12. (There is no school on the 11th--Veterans' Day.) If you are a veteran or would like to come and honor those who have served our country in the military, you are invited to join us in the gym at 9:30am.

In other news, would you be praying for the Rickabaughs (Class of '99). Patty has been confined to bed rest during a difficult time in her pregnancy. Pray for her health, the health of the baby, and that God's will would be done in their lives.

Alumni Night

I wish I had taken time to take more pictures last night, but the constant stream of alumni at the alumni booth made me forget about my camera and focus on the almost 100 alumni that checked in. What a great night! It was fun to see graduates from the 70's, 80's (some of whom had kids on the field in the game!), 90's and 2000's. We gave away $200 in gift cards, candy for the alumni kids, and free popcorn compliments of the Booster Club.

A highlight of the evening was taking group photos of graduates from the 70's-80's, the 90's, and the 2000's and then watching as they stood around in small groups chatting! It was fun to watch as old friends caught up with each other's lives. Check in again in a couple days when I will have posted group photos of alumni at the game!

Of course, for the students, the 53-6 (I think that was the final score! I didn't watch much of the game.) win over Seattle Lutheran and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen were the night's truly memorable moments. Tonight, about 140 high school students will be taking a Homecoming dinner cruise. It was just last year that the tradition of having a Homecoming Formal began.

Homecoming Week!

Remember when you spent late nights getting your costume together for Spirit Week competitions? This is the week, and the kids are having a great time! Yesterday was Around the World Day. Paula Brown set the standard as she dressed for the senior class who were Africans for the day. That's her on the right above with ASB president Kelsey "Lion" Lyons, daughter of TBS alumna Kristi (Andersen) Grassman and granddaughter of history teacher Gary Andersen.

Today the kids took on the best and worst of super heros and finished the day with a rousing powder puff football game. The freshman/senior team was victorious.

Be sure to join us on Friday, October 23, at 7pm at Curtis High School for the Homecoming game. All alumni will be admitted free, and there will be lots of prizes given away!

Dear Alumni

I am hearing great things about TBS alumni. I know that many of you are pursuing higher education, many have jobs that you love, many have children of your own AND some of you are my age!!

I have been involved in Christian school education for 34 years. I got married in 1975 and 9 days later was facing a classroom of 34 second graders. Nothing in my preparation to be a teacher prepared me for the challenges of those eight year olds! Needless to say, I figured it out and 34 years later can not think of a better way to have spent my life than with students.

I am looking forward to meeting you at Homecoming October 23rd. The game will be held at Curtis Stadium, starting at 7pm. We will have an alumni booth set up right inside the gate; I hope you will stop by and say hi, after you have been admitted for free (Sorry, this year it is just you that is free, not your family.) In addition, we plan to have some fun give-aways for you as our way of saying we love and appreciate you.

The family at TBS is warm and embracing; I am so thankful to be here. I look forward to meeting you (and your family) in a few weeks!

A late summer wedding--

Many of us remember when little Jessica Teibel sat on the bleachers of TBS watching her older siblings competing on various high school sports teams. Jessica, who grew up around TBS as her mom drove a bus for the school and managed the busses for awhile, graduated in 2007. On Saturday, October 3, Jessica married Braden Cowen in a beautiful ceremony at Southside Baptist. It was fun to see the whole family participate in the wedding. Older sisters, Heather ('93), Carrie ('97), and Suzanne ('98) were part of the wedding party. Also standing with Jessica were her sister-in-law, Ember, wife of Joe ('95), as well as TBS classmates, Elizabeth Johnson (Brown '07) and Jenn Maki (DiGuilio '07). Congratulations, Jessica and Braden!

An incredible day--

Yesterday was an incredible day at TBS. The high school ran a chapel schedule and during the hour that would have been chapel, students focused on campus clean up, and I mean CLEAN UP! About half of the student body tackled cleaning up the hill between the high school classroom building and the elementary classrooms on the hill. One hour and 175+ man hours later, the campus looks incredible. The kids worked hard--and, I might add, with great attitudes! Some of the kids even found it hard to quit. Ice cream sandwiches were enjoyed by all at the end.

(I think that's Information Technology for those of you "initially-challenged" readers!) That's Jason pictured at the right front above with many of his '08 classmates. Homecoming is on Friday, October 23 at 7pm. The football game will be at Curtis High School Stadium in University Place with the usual halftime festivities honoring the Homecoming court.

All alumni are welcome. There will be drawings for prizes for alumni who check in at the alumni table on your way to the stands! Look for the alumni tent. Watch this site or check into the Tacoma Baptist Alumni page on Facebook.

It's been awhile since I've taken the time to let you know what's up. Lots going on around TBS. We have a new superintendent who is bringing change and excitement to the campus. Hope some of you will be stopping by to catch up during the coming year.

Meanwhile, it was a busy summer…

Rader Johnson ('07) and Elizabeth Brown ('07) became husband and wife on August 29th. Rader and Liz are making their first home in San Diego where Rader is in the Marine Corps.

Oh, by the way, Homecoming 2009 is October 23, 2009 at 7pm at Curtis High School Stadium. We'll have some giveaways and lots of fun for alumni. Stay tuned for more information.

…and did a fabulous job. Not only did we hear about he and wife Melissa's church planting ministry in Austria, but we learned a lot about the culture and history of the country, too! Thanks, Eric (L '93) for sharing with our student body.

Eric was introduced by Coach Smith who told the student body that the Kittitas Kisser Award was named after Eric, who received 14 stitches in his chin at a football game during the early years of football at TBS. Eric closed his message with a wonderful solo. Wish you all could have been here!

Seems I missed a whole month along the way!

Although I'm no longer working with the alumni as an official representative of TBS, I still feel connected to many of you and will try to continue to share the news and happenings of the alumni family. Please feel free to send me news and updates to post here.

Those of you who will be in the area on Tuesday, December 30, plan to come to the TBS gym for an alumni basketball night! Basketball games are on the agenda. Both the high school variety and an alumni game. The planning is still in the works, but you can contact me by phone (475-7226 x112) or by blog to pick up a few more details! It was a fundraiser for the girls' volleyball program and the girls varsity, girls jv, football team, faculty, and alumni were invited to play in a tournament on Saturday night, October 4. After several hard-fought games, the alumni team lost a squeaker to the faculty in the championship game of the night. Playing on on the team was Jenn DiGuilio, '07 (Jenn is newly engaged to Joe Maki ['06]. A May '09 wedding is planned.); Jessica Teibel '07; Liz Brown '07; Max Hall '06; Gil Teobaldo '86; and Michael Hall '07 (back row). It was fun to see them all back on the court. Seems amazing that Mr. Andersen and Mr. Plunket anchored the winning faculty team. They were joined by a couple of younger and much more agile teachers (and the two varsity volleyball coaches!) who helped secure the championship!

Congratulations to Elya (M '00) and Ryan('00) B on the birth of a baby girl, Noelani, at 9:55 am, September 5th. She weighed in at 7-lbs 1-oz and is 20 inches long. All are doing fine!

Today I attended a wedding reception at Northwest Baptist Seminary for Katie and Garrett ('04) L. who were married on July 19 in Wheaton Illinois. I love attending these events and hearing the testimony of how God brought two of His own together in such a special way. Garrett and Katie both graduated from Cedarville University this spring. Now it is on to law school for Garrett and a job in a hospital's pediatric intensive care unit for Katie. They will be living in Virgina Beach, Virginia as Garrett attends school for the next three years. We wish them the Lord's best as they begin life together!

A Summer Wedding

Congratulations to Lindsay (P '00) and Ayobami A. who were married on Saturday, July 12, 2008 in Kilworth Chapel on the University of Puget Sound Campus. It was a great celebration and we wish them God's blessing as they begin their new life together. Lindsay will return this fall to her third grade teaching position at Lighthouse Christian School in Gig Harbor.

It was also fun to see Lindsay's siblings and TBS grads/student Rita ('07), Titus ('07), and Sam ('09) participating! Gotta love dancing down the aisle in celebration at the end of the ceremony. A fun time was enjoyed by all.

Welcome, Silas!

Congratulations to Melissa and Eric ('93) L, who welcomed a son, Silas, into their family on May 16, 2008. Eric and Melissa live in Vienna, Austria, where they work with Team Missions. Read more about their ministry here.

They've arrived!
Myra and Karel ('93) N and their daughters have arrived and are settling into their new home in Nicaragua. Karel will be working as Alongside Ministries Nicaraguan Ministry Director with Youth Unlimited. Pray for them as they adjust to lots of new things in their lives, as well as a new work for the Lord!

Congratulations to Becca (E '00) and Bryant R who were married last September on a mountain top in Aspen, Colorado. Becca works in real estate there and her husband has a construction company.

Becca's brother, Trevor (E '93), and sister-in-law, Amy (K '92) moved to Aspen with their three girls about a year and a half ago. They have since added a son to the family! Here's a photo of Trevor and Amy with friends at Becca's wedding.

In other news, Richard (S '00) recently wrote to say that he is working for NetJets Aviation, a Bershire Hathaway Company owned and operated by Warren Buffett. He is a corporate pilot, flying all over the world. He recently bought a home in DesMoines, WA and is enjoying living in Washington again. Here are some recent photos he sent:

In other parts of the world, Ben (B '95) is a missionary in Honduras.

He has been working with World Evangelism Unlimited and is in charge of the technical aspects of crusades all over Latin America. He has been to Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, and now the Dominican Republic. In December 2006, Ben married Jessica G. and they are now missionaries together, traveling and working in crusades and festivals.

Graduation 2008

On Friday, June 6, in the Douglas E. Bond Gymnasium, 44 seniors happily accepted their diplomas, moved their tassels and celebrated their graduation with hundreds of eager spectators. It was a night with many alumni sons and daughters becoming alumni themselves. Although you can only see 11 of the graduates in the photo above, several of them are alumni kids: the first and third graduate from the left end of the row are Austin and Amber F (twins of Lisa (T '87) and Andy F). Number four in line is Gabrielle T, daughter of Gil ('86) and Gina (B '84) T. Moving down the row, the third grad from the right is Jason L. (son of Christy (S '86) and John ('86) L. Other alumni kids graduating from their parent's Alma Mater included Jacob B, son of Beth (B '83) and Don B; Daniel S, son of Lorrie (O '78) and David S ('78) and Carolyn S, daughter of Janet (L '78) and Mike S ('76).

Former TBHS biology and Bible teacher, Nathan Han, was the evening's keynote speaker.

Last day of school!

Another school year has come and gone! Today is the last final, the awards assembly, and graduation.

Some of you probably remember when your year revolved around the school calendar. You probably thought it would always be that way and then real life closed in. Once you have children, you return to the September to June "year". Some of us never leave that way of thinking! We are teachers.

I have not posted for awhile. The end of the year gets so busy. I'm looking forward to updating the blog in the next week. Keep checking in! I promise some photos and news soon!

It was good to hear from Renee (F '93) O this morning. She and her husband live in Pella, Iowa. Renee is a stay-at-home mom, taking care of their son, Jacob Paul. who was born on February 17. As you can see in the photo, he is a happy four month old! It was good to hear from you, Renee.

In other news…

Another bit of great news from Kim (C '97) W whose husband just released a new CD. Kim is rightfully proud of her husband's success! Aaron's album was released the same day as George Straight's new album and outsold it during the first two days of release in the state of Texas!

I just got home from another wonderful, God-honoring wedding of a couple who met and began dating while students at Tacoma Baptist. A big congratulations to Katie (S '05) and Adam ('06) G who were married tonight at Central Lutheran Church. Of the 12 members of the wedding party (including the bride and groom), 10 of them were TBS kids including Mike and Angie (H '95) G, Andy H ('03), Brian H (TBS junior), and Chris G ('98)! Adam's best man was Andy E from the class of '06. Katie's sister Candace ('02) was her maid of honor, and her cousin Dara (G '98) F was her matron of honor. Adam's brother, David, attended TBS, but graduated from Life Christian. There were too many alumni there to name them all. It was a great night and I want to wish the happy couple a wonderful life of serving the Lord together. I know that is their desire.

Sorry for the long delay in updating the news, but my other job responsibilities include teaching, and I'm afraid that has become the priority as first semester ended and two yearbook deadlines passed. Now I have a little bit of a breather before the next rush of tests, grades, and deadlines.

But I digress. I have heard from many alumni in the past couple of months and will try over the next few posts to catch you up on what's happening.

Graduates Dawn (V '98) and Aaron ('98) M welcomed Lincoln Rodney M. into their family on March 5, 2008. He weighed in at 6 lbs 11 oz and is 20.5 inches long. Dawn and Aaron wrote, "We praise God for the blessing of Lincoln. Our prayer is for him to '...be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.' (Joshua 1:9) Our Lord is so good and faithful!" Congratulations to all three of you!

In more recent happenings, it was fun to see Johanna (T '95)W who is a stay-at-home mom and sells Tastefully Simple products through home sales as a hobby/job. I got to touch base with her at a party hosted by Amy (V '95 ) R. Both Amy and Johanna have 6-year-old daughters and toddler boys. It was fun to get to see them as adults, but remember them as cheerleaders cheering on the Crusaders! Feel free to contact me if you would like to get in touch with Johanna. It's great to help our alumni in their business pursuits!

On March 8, the gym was filled with wonderful people and items up for bid at the annual auction. (The auction is always the second Saturday of March. Keep that in mind for 2009!) Of course, it's always great to see many alumni and parents of alumni who support the mission of TBS through their attendance and purchase of many auction items. It was a nice surprise to see Virginia L ('03) who graduated from Grove City College in Pennsylvania last spring. She is teaching English at Bethel High School and also coaches water polo at Stadium High School in Tacoma. It's always fun to see Virginia who seems to love what she is doing. Her sister Cecelia ('02) is working on a graduate degree in Florida, and brother Peter ('05) is a junior at Grove City.

Among the alumni who sent Christmas wishes and news were Dawn (V '98)and Aaron ('98)M. They made the happy announcement that they will become first-time parents in the new year. Congratulations!

Just before Christmas, Kim (C '97)W and her husband, Aaron, welcomed baby Jack into their family. Jack joins older brother Jake.

Christmas greetings came from Tammy (F '92) S and her husband Russ. Looks like they enjoyed a little of Europe this past summer. Russ is a high school music teacher in the Spokane area, and Tammy is a stay-at-home mom who also gives private music lessons. Here they are shown with their one-year-old, Brianna Claire.

Welcome back to a new year! It's almost the end of the semester and half-way through the school year! We are back in the routine now and it is time for a much-delayed post.

I'm sure you can remember your school days when you actually had two weeks off at Christmas and spring and summer vacations, too. All too soon, the real world set in and you had to choose when to take your vacation time!

It was good to hear from several alumni at Christmas. Julie (M '90) P. and her husband, Scott, live in Federal Way with their son, Justin, who is almost 3. Julie and Scott are expecting a second child in June. Julie is involved in ministry at church and enjoys being a stay-at-home mom.

As the blog writer, I have the privilege of sharing a Christmas photo of my grandkids. Of course, all are the children of TBS alumni. Kaelyn and Cooper (children of Amy [V '95])R. share the spotlight with Philip and Levin (sons of Jason V. '92) while enjoying Christmas morning at Grandma's house!

I also had notes from Tara (G.'00) and Ryan B., Kimberly (C. '97) and Aaron W., Katie S. '95, Dawn (V. '98) and Aaron ('98) M., and Christina (A.'02)K. When I remember, I will bring the photos they sent to post here for you all to see! Thanks to all of them for keeping in touch.

Erin (D '99) and Josh R are still living in Wilmington, NC. Their daughter, Dina will be two on November 29th and her little sister, Nicole is 8 months old. The family will be traveling to the Pacific Northwest for Christmas.

I just checked in with Kim (C '97) W. She and her husband welcomed a second son to the family on November 5. Baby Jack weighed in at 6lb. 8oz. and was 19 1/4 inches long. Mom, Dad, and brother Jake are all doing well. Congratulations!

Do you remember tolo?

Do you remember helping to plan or attending the junior class-sponsored fall party? In years past, it was called tolo. More recently, it has been called EFKAT (Event Formerly Known as Tolo). Whether girls ask guys, guys ask girls or groups of kids come together, it is a night of fun, food and costumes. From the simple to the ornate, creativity abouts. The theme on Friday, November 2 was "Happy Holidays." Among the holidays represented were Veteran's Day, Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparent's Day, and, of course, Valentine's Day. In the photo below, Joelle I (daughter of former TBS Spanish teacher Connie I) and Clete J (brother of TBS grads Preston '05 and Rader '07) wait for their turn to head through the buffet line. The fundraiser was a great success!

Welcome back! Here you go with some photos of Homecoming guests from the 90's . . .

From the class of 2022? It's' the spirited daughter of Kirsten (N '90)H. Kirsten's sons, Seth and Howie, are TBS middle and high schoolers.

Former TBS teacher Josh A and his wife, Heidi (K '96), left their two boys with Heidi's mom and enjoyed a night out. Josh and Heidi will return to mission work in South Africa in January.

High school secretary and coach's wife Susan S with kids Morgan ('01) and Kyle ('98).

It was a nice surprise to see Barbara (T '92)F visiting from Oregon with her children Junior (not pictured), Izabela, and Julia. They came with Barbara's brother, Gil ('86) and Gina (B '84)T, and family. Gil and Gina's son and daughter, Nico and Gabby, are TBS freshman and senior. One more T is on his way to high school before too many years.

Kerri (A '92) S came to watch niece Kelsey A participate in the halftime coronation. Kelsey was sophomore princess.

Trig ('98) F left his wife, Dara, at home, but brought his two happy and talkative children, Reese and Gunnar, with him. They certainly reminded me of their parents who were voted into the Class of '98's Hall of Fame as "Outrageously Outgoing!"

It was good to visit with Terry and Johnny H ('95) and reminisce about Johnny's football days at TBS.

It was really fun to see so many of you at the game. Even though the team did not win the game, there was plenty of excitement on and off the field. Almost 70 alumni checked in at the alumni tent. There was a good representation from across the years. Thanks for stopping by. I know there were many other alumni there. Hope to see you again next year!

The craziness of Spirit Week continues and Tuesday was Motorcycle madness day. Following the Route 66 theme brought out the creativity in freshman Eden H. (daughter of alumna Jeanice (O. '78) H.)

The teachers were a little intimidated to be standing in front of all that leather!

We hope to see many alumni at the Homecoming game on Saturday, October 20, 7 pm at Curtis HS Stadium. All alumni will be admitted free!

Many of you have memories of Spirit Weeks past, I'm sure. Some things never change and there are always a few students who go all out.

Yesterday was "State Day" following the Route 66 theme. Creativity abounded! One of the class winners, sophomore Kelsey L, daughter of Kristi (A '89) G, and granddaughter of history teacher Gary A. represented New York in a big way! Here she is, shown with fellow class winner Braden B (son of New Hope teacher Wendy B) representing "Cans-as."

With the Lord

We learned this past week of the death of one of our alumni, Blaine M ('96) Blaine leaves a wife and two young girls. Our sympathy and prayers go out to his parents, siblings and wife during this difficult time.

We also received a note from Tara L ('06) telling us of the death of her cousin, Rafa, in Brazil. Rafa attended TBS and lived with the L family several years ago. Our prayers are with the family in Brazil as well as the L family here in the states.

Fall Retreat

This afternoon, 190 high school students and faculty returned from a wonderful two days of fall retreat! The kids had a chance to eat together, sing together, hear God's Word together, play games together and get acquainted with students new to the school. They even spent time in the lake and pool enjoying the 85 degree temperatures. The four pictures following the bus photo are children of alumni from the '80's. Can you identify any of them?

Some things never change! The competitive nature of the students ran high during team competitons. This team won the airplane flying contest. Being number one is good!

Tonight Christina A (2002) married Kevin K on a beautiful late summer evening in the Rose Garden at NWBS. The wedding was vintage Christina--lots of laughter and smiles and very meaningful. It's always a joy for me to get to witness the joining of two lives who love the Lord and desire to center their new home around Him. The whole A family gathered for the celebration--newlyweds Matt ('95) and Brittany, as well as bridesmaids and sisters Mary ('94) and Elizabeth ('00). Elizabeth's little guy, Jacob, stole the show as he was pulled down the aisle in his wagon. Congratulations, Christina and Kevin!

Summer Weddings

It's always a privilege to offer our congratulations to those alumni who have gotten married!

On June 3, 2007, Tania S. ('03) married David B. at the Pioneer Park Pavilion in Puyallup. Congratulations. (I forgot to bring the camera or a photo of Tania and David would appear here!

Our best wishes to Derek ('04) and Krystal W. who were married on June 16, 2007. Derek and Krystal met while part of the college ministry led by Derek's brother, Chad Mc. ('93), in Vancouver, Washington.

Matt ('95) and Brittany A. were married in Anacortes on July 7, 2007. They live in Bellingham. Matt is the editor of the Ferndale, Washington newspaper.

After meeting and beginning their courtship at Tacoma Baptist, Josh L ('01) and Kirstin (N '03) finally tied the knot at a beautiful ceremony on the L farm on July 28, 2007. The reception was held at Pioneer Park Pavilion in Puyallup. Kirstin graduated in the spring of '07 from Pacific Lutheran University.
